National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has issued a message to Pakistan after a terror attack in Gagangir, Jammu and Kashmir. “Kashmir will not become a part of Pakistan,” he said. Speaking candidly, Abdullah said Pakistan must concrete steps to stop acts of terrorism in its relations with India to usher in a harmonious relationship. “Kashmir Pakistan nahi banega (Kashmir will never become Pakistan). Let us live with dignity and succeed.” The statement reflects not only a political stance from him but also the feeling of many in this region who would love to find peace and stability over conflict.

Two laborers at the construction site died immediately. Four more and the doctor later died of their injuries. Abdullah has expressed pain over the incident, admitting that he will never be able to understand what drives the terrorists who waged the attack. “This attack was very unfortunate. What will the terrorists get from this? Do they think they will be able to create a Pakistan here? ” he asked rhetorically.

His words point out that critical view of terrorism as only creating more suffering and does not tend to work with those striving for peace.

An investigation by the National Investigation Agency already has been opened by the Indian government into the attack. Abdullah threatened Pakistan with “very severe” consequences if it continues to harbor and support terrorism on its territory. “If they couldn’t make a Pakistan in 75 years, how will it be done now?” he asked while calling for an end to the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for decades. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the newly minted Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, condemned the attack as “a despicable act of cowardice.” He assured that they would receive the “harshest response from the security forces” and conveyed his condolences to the families of victims while wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured.

In the same breath, Omar Abdullah categorized the attack as “dastardly and cowardly,” with a focus on the gullibility of non-local laborers engaged in crucial infrastructure projects in the area.

The tragic loss of life in this attack highlights again the very present nature of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir but equally underlines the challenges to all working in the region. Abdullah’s comments resonate well with many who believe that the way forward lies in cultivating peace with mutual respect, rather than perpetuating violence and hostility.

An important strength in the discussions of Kashmir’s future is the strength of people there and their desire to lead a peaceful life. Abdullah’s stern stand is a reminder that the aspirations toward peace and development in Kashmir are not giving in to the challenges still plaguing this region. “We are trying to put this to an end so we can move on from the misery,” he concluded, catching the hope for a brighter future for the region. In light of such atrocities, there’s a dire need for unity and strength among the Kashmir people. Farooq Abdullah’s message to Pakistan asserts a collective determination to ensure the integrity of this region thus reiterating the fact that Kashmir will forever remain a part of India.
