Fake Cop Fraud

A woman from Mumbai recently shared a video online showing a man pretending to be a policeman, attempting to extort ₹50,000 from her for using a vape. The incident took place in Mumbai’s Powai area and has since gone viral, receiving widespread attention and reactions on social media.

In her video, the woman explained that she was traveling in an autorickshaw when the man, dressed in plain clothes (a white shirt and pants), followed her and jumped into the auto. He claimed to be a police officer and threatened her with arrest, demanding a hefty fine of ₹50,000 for using the vape. The woman sensed something was off and began recording the interaction.

The video shows her sitting at the back of the autorickshaw with the man next to her. She says, “I’m currently on MIDC Road, and this man followed me and got into my auto-rickshaw. He’s forcibly trying to take me to Powai Chowki .” As she recorded him, the man attempted to block the camera and push it away.

In a moment of quick thinking, she pointed out that he could not take her anywhere without a female police officer present. Realizing he was being recorded and exposed, the imposter quickly fled from the autorickshaw and ran away.

An X (formerly Twitter) user who shared the video posted a detailed account, explaining that the man tried to intimidate the woman after she left college. He even directed the auto driver to take them to the Powai police station and used her vape while still threatening her with consequences. The man refused to show any ID or identify himself as a legitimate officer.

The video has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many praising the woman for her bravery and quick thinking. Users also urged the Mumbai police to take immediate action against the fake policeman, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the safety and trust of women in the city.
