How Ratan Tata’s Simple Gesture of Gifting a Shirt to Shantanu Naidu Strengthened Their Bond and Showed the Power of Compassion and Friendship
Shantanu Naidu, Ratan Tata’s closest aide, recalls once spending half his salary for a Brooks Brothers shirt to impress the industrialist. Naidu recalled how, during one of his earliest meetings with Tata, he noticed the latter sporting the brand and ended up buying the same shirt with the hope that their budding friendship would only grow stronger. At the material level, it was more than just a gesture; it had its roots in Naidu’s profound admiration for Tata.

Their friendship, which began in 2014, was based on mutual interests and affection for animals. Naidu had created reflective collars to protect stray dogs, after watching in horror as such an animal was involved in a fatal accident. Unable to get funding for the initiative, he wrote to Tata, who is known for his love for animals. Two months later, Tata invited him to his office in Mumbai, where a friendship was born. Tata supported Naidu’s venture, Motopaws, and later encouraged his involvement in other social causes, which include the good companionship service for seniors, Goodfellows.

During Naidu’s stay at Cornell University, the shirt took a heart-warming turn. When Naidu tore his costly shirt, Tata surprised him by buying him another one. When Naidu paid Tata, the latter smiled and said, “Can’t I give my friend a shirt?” It was a generosity that heaved above their friendship bond.
Naidu continues contributing to society through Tata while making sure that compassion and innovation, two tenets of the friendship from the outset, not only endure but are a hallmark of the lives transformed through the work done in this more inclusive arena.
