India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions Escalate: Trudeau Accuses Indian Agents of Covert Activities Amid Strong Denial from India

Serious setbacks have plagued the diplomatic relationship between India and Canada. In this regard, the most recent and significant setback to arise has been grave accusations leveled by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against the Indians. He has leveled grave charges against Indian agents having engaged in espionage on Canadian soil, threatening to threaten citizens, and have even participated in violent activities. Indian relations have strongly denied such accusations in a responding assertion and labeled them as “politically motivated.”

The Canadian Prime Minister recently appeared in public press conferences to vow that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Canada have gathered “solid and concrete evidence” about Indian agents’ activities threatening the public. Trudeau further insisted that the Canadians had tried to cooperate with India but were rebuffed. According to him, the meetings of officials between these two countries presented “evidence of six Indian agents alleged to be involved in criminal activities.”

Rather than accepting these accusations, India responded strongly by labeling them as baseless. The government also made an allegation that Canada provides a safe haven to anti-India extremists. This makes the already fraught diplomatic fallout worse. India responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats and recalling its diplomats from Canada.

Trudeau has linked the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023 to agents from India, further straining the strained relationship between the two nations. However, no concrete evidence has been brought forward, which has left both nations in a tense standoff. The fallout currently has the future of India-Canada relations hanging in the balance.
