A train derailment in Gwalior was averted after the driver spotted iron rods on the tracks, prompting an investigation into the incident.

The most recent of such happenings was recently reported in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, where a goods train driver found iron rods placed horizontally on the railway tracks with the intention of potentially derailing the train. The iron rods were planted on the good track on the Gwalior Birlanagar station late in the night. Thanks to the driver, he was able to brake the train, travelling at the speed of 12 Kilo meters per hour before the collision by mere inches what could have resulted in to the most catastrophic accident ever recorded in the country. The Gwalior Police and the Railways have acted cautiously and immediately filing a case against unidentified anti social elements who committed such a dare devilry.

This follows another another incident recently recorded in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli; loco pilots of a passenger train had to stop the train upon sighting a heap of sand dumped on the tracks near the Raghuraj Singh station. Due to the efforts of the members of the crew, some rather serious mishaps were avoided. In addition, the security of the passengers was recently threatened when stones were thrown at the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express which broke some of the glass pane and caused discomfort to the travellers.

Such incidents raise a concern on the level of security measures needed to be taken in protecting railway systems and more so, the lives of passengers. The previous month, the authorities in Punjab prevented a similar situation and managed to take nine iron rods from the tracks of the Delhi-Bathinda Express, which proves the need to monitor and respond regularly to prevent such actions.
