Supreme Court to Address Tirupati Laddu Controversy: Formation of SIT and Demands for Impartial Investigation into Allegations of Animal Fat Use
A crucial legal concern of the present days is Supreme Court of India’s plans to hear petitions over the contentious usage for animal fat in laddu prasad provided to the devotees at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple located in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh. In response to these very serious allegations, the court has called for the setting up of a separate SIT [Special Investigation Team] to investigate them; issues have been raised regarding food safety and compliance with religious freedom. The formation of the proposed SIT will comprise of five members where two members are from CBI, two from the state government, and one from FSSAI.

In the course of the hearing, the Supreme Court pointed to the need to have a free and fair investigation without any politicking or drama which would taint the Investigative hear. The case has attracted a lot of attention especially after the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrabababu Naidu criticizing the previous Y.S. Government headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy for malpractices. These allegations have led a political argumentative with YSR Congress party targeting Naidu for acknowledged as to have used the situation to score political points.

In this contentious backdrop, the Supreme Court has raised questions over the timing of the statements made by Naidu and whether they relate to formation of SIT and the registered FIR on September 25. While deciding whether the SIT should continue its investigation or another body should take up the probe, the court is keen on undertaking a clear and impartial probe that would help enhance public confidence in the handling of prasad at the temple.
