Junior doctors in West Bengal continue their strike over the RG Kar rape-murder case, demanding justice and better security measures in hospitals across the state.
West Bengal Junior Doctors Intensify Strike, Demanding Justice and Enhanced Security Measures Over RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case
Junior doctors of West Bengal have sustained their stir against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Kolkata. The doctors, who have resumed the ’cease work’ since October 1, are calling for justice to their colleague as well as increased security measures in health facilities in the state.

These doctors have expressed their opinion regarding the safety issues and have once again recalled their requests regarding the improved safety measures for healthcare workers in the hospitals. There are meetings among ourselves on the way forward but we are resolved, the junior doctors said, addressing the media. They also complained on the inconveniences that patients undergo but at no particular instance did the crew forget the fact that the lives of health care refugees cannot be taken lightly.

The continued protest resulted from a violent incident that happened at the state-run College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital, where some medics were assaulted by a relative of a patient. This, together with the continued uncertainty on the investigation of the rape-murder at RG Kar Medical College has led to the stir.
Similarly, medical students & interns came out holding torch on occasion while doctors in private hospitals in Kolkata only lit up an ‘Agni’ at Ganga Ghat. On escalating the matter, the Apex court has yesterday directed to submit a report on safety measures in Hospitals like CCTV cameras and Biometric systems.
