Right before Mithun Chakraborty is about to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he reminisces on his journey, with a focus on the days after his National Award for his debut film, Mrigayaa. In a candid interview with India Today, Mithun told how overnight success changed his demeanor, not always for the better. He won National Award for Best Actor which launched him into the limelight overnight and brought him the fame he has since been enjoying.

But there was an unexpected side effect of the new found fame. “I do remember a time when I was quite arrogant, after Mrigayaa, I got my first National Award,” Mithun admitted. A few days later I started acting like Al Pacino. I thought Aisa lag raha tha that I am the greatest actor. This inflated self importance was not missed; as a producer observed his changing attitude, he bluntly told him to ‘get out.’ Mithun realised that even success has to be accompanied with humility and this is when he got a wake up call.

Mithun struggled through the dark days before fame, from having to endure homelessness to days without food. He has repeatedly turned down requests to write a biography, worrying that his life of hardship would discourage others. “Yeh safar bahut kathin tha. In spite of such odds, Mithun’s talent was in its best show in Disco Dancer and Agneepath, and other iconic films, which won him several accolades, including a National Award for his best performances.
