The second Prime Minister of India was Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was known for his simplicity, integrity, and strength of character. Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904, and his birth anniversary, Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, is celebrated on the same day as Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. India celebrates his 120 birth anniversary in 2024, raising appreciation on the many achievements he made for the country.
Shastri was dynamic leader par extraordinary who after having left an indelible mark on socio-economic and political landscape of the country. As the Prime Minister he was most successful in leading India during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. For Nehru, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan meant ‘Hail the soldiers; Hail the farmers.’ During his tenure India not only stood up for itself and for its rights but also furthered its policies on states self sufficeincy in food production.

A unique accomplishment that citizens and scholars recognize was his advocacy of the Green Revolution in India. Its policies sought to enhance yields in agricultural production, something vitally important because India was fast becoming a food-deficit country. His appreciation of changes and implementing new methods of farming as well as use advanced technology is what paved way for India’s future agriculture advancement.
Mr. Shastri was a humble, hard working, and purposeful leader, who had strong determination to work for the country. Although he served the post of Prime Minister for a short time only (1964-1966) he has created a legacy that millions people follow. It is an honour for an individual to have his birthday celebrated on this date, more so when it is his 120th birth anniversary: we celebrate his life and values as well as his immortal legacy in India. Virtues of Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji continue to remain etched in form of his tireless fight for peace, progress and unity of the nation.
