One of the biggest and the most colourful fests of India, the Durga Puja will start from October 8. Celebrated as the victory of good over evil it’s a festival where the goddess Durga is worshipped to celebrate her victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It is indeed enjoyed with much funfair especially in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, and other areas of east India though the glory of this festive has reached every nook and corner of India and even International border.

History and Mythology:
Durga Puja has pure mythological background in Indian culture, as the myths goes that once the gods combined their powers and created the goddess Durga to fight against a mighty demon known as Mahishasura who ravaged the heaven and the earth. The fully armed ten armed Goddess riding on the back of a lion with weapons in her hands gives strength and protection. The festival has been celebrated for many centuries, its history dating back to the late medieval age, however in Bengal it only became tremendously popular in the 18th century.
Significance of Durga Puja:
It is of great cultural, religious, and social value. To the Hindus, it symbolizing the triumph of a deity over a demon or the triumph of Dharma over adharma, rejuvenation of the world, paragon of non-secular power and female energy, Shakhti. Festivals are also other incidences that may call for gathering of families, clans or communities and celebrations. The days going to Durga Puja are full of zest as people begin buying new clothes, utensils, and other necessary goods also start putting on decorations at their home frontages for the puja.
Traditions and Rituals:
Durga Puja is very elaborate. It is also celebrated for ten days out of which the last five days that are Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Vijayadashami are the most important. Goddess Durga’s statues are placed in decorated worship tents called ‘pandals’ and people offer prayers, dance and sing songs in her praise. On the last day an immersions ceremony is performed and the idols are taken to rivers or seas known as Visarjan.
