Around 275 mm (11 inches) of rain fell in certain areas of Mumbai on Wednesday night, severely hindering traffic and delaying the Mumbai local trains that millions of people depend on for their daily commute. Four people lost their lives as Mumbai was hit by severe rains that caused flooding and stopped the country’s financial center. Additionally, schools were closed on Thursday, September 26 due to the downpour.

Mumbai is under a red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) due to possible heavy rainfall. In response to the IMD forecast, the Mumbai municipal administration has proclaimed a holiday for all Mumbai schools and universities. Because of the intense rain, the Pune district administration has also announced a break for universities and schools.

The Central Railways announced in a statement that “all local trains are running normally.” Due to a few cautions and postponed mail express trains, the main line is three to four minutes behind schedule. Everything else is as it should be. Prior to the water level dropping between Govandi and Mankhurd, the Central Railways reported that local trains on the harbor line had restarted. “Trains are moving at a limited speed of 25 kmph and with caution. At 11:23 p.m., services were restarted,” it stated.

Aside from Andheri, torrential rains caused traffic jams and waterlogging in a number of Mumbai neighborhoods, including Kurla East, Nehru Nagar, and Chembur. On Wednesday night, there were significant traffic jams at Kurla Bridge.

At approximately 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday, a landslide at the Mumbra bypass was caused by heavy rain. According to authorities, a 45-year-old lady perished on Wednesday in the suburban Andheri area when a nullah overflowed as a result of intense rains.
