In a big reshuffle, Parliament has approved the names of leaders from various political parties to as many as 24 standing committees, which have important oversight responsibilities. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will be part of the Defence Affairs Committee – an indication of his centrality to issues related to national security. Actor-turned-BJP MP Kangana Ranaut — she is from Himachal Pradesh and represents its Mandi constituency — entered Parliament with her name figuring on the Communications and Information Technology Committee.

While Kangana will be part of the Communications Committee, it will be chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, with BJP’s Radha Mohan Singh leading the overall standing committees.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, often ridiculed for his acerbic tongue, was asked to lead the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was joined by another Congress MP who had also played Ram in an iconic TV show — Arun Govil. BJP’s Radha Mohan Das Agarwal headed the Home Affairs committee and Bhartruhari Mahtab of BJD got to chair the Finance Committee.

Standing committees are like mini-parliaments, constituted to reflect political diversity and to give recommendations to the government on policy-making as well as to oversee different ministries in order to make relevant laws. They play a critical role in giving shape to the country’s legislation and monitoring the functioning of the government.
