PM Modi ends US visit without meeting Trump, despite Trump’s claims of an upcoming meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finished his three-day visit to the United States without meeting former President Donald Trump. This was unexpected because Trump had announced at a rally in Flint, Michigan, that he hoped to see Modi during his trip.

Reports from Fox News said that Modi might attend Trump’s rally on Long Island, but Indian officials denied that any meeting was planned even before Modi left for the US. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed there was no specific meeting at present with Trump.

During his time in the US, Modi attended the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, where he met leaders from other countries. He also spoke to thousands of Indian-Americans in Long Island and met with major tech companies. On Monday, he addressed the UN’s Summit of the Future and held discussions with various world leaders throughout his visit. However, he did not meet either Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump had expressed his excitement about meeting Modi, calling him fantastic at his rally. Despite their previous close relationship and shared political beliefs, Modi’s decision not to meet Trump was surprising.

In the past, Modi has praised Trump’s America First policy, which matches his own Make in India program. Their friendship gained attention during the Howdy, Modi event in Houston in 2019, where Modi invited Trump to speak in front of a large crowd of Indian-Americans, a key voting group for Trump. During that rally, Modi even shouted, Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar .

In 2020, Modi hosted Trump at the Namaste Trump event in Ahmedabad, which drew over 100,000 people. These events helped Trump connect with his Hindu supporters in the US. However, this year, there was no repeat of the Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar moment, leaving Trump’s hopes for a meeting with Modi unfulfilled.
