Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao Celebrate the Oscar Nomination of Laapataa Ladies: Reflecting on Their Journey from Lagaan to the Academy Awards
Kiran Rao’s satirical film, Laapataa Ladies, which was premiered and well received has been chosen to be India’s entry to the Academy Awards next year. As reported in the latest interview given to India Today, Kiran has revealed a rather pleasant story of how Aamir Khan took this happy news. She said that although Aamir tends to underestimate such news, he could not contain himself this time around and said, Mubarakan hum sabko, bahut bahut mubarak.
Consequently, the initial conversation about the news was held over the phone, then Kiran met Aamir after the screening, noting that he was really happy and even said he was ‘over the moon’. Recalling her past memories, Kiran remembered the campaign for Oscar with Aamir’s first venture Lagaan as an assistant director in 2001. However, she never went to the Oscars herself, but young women of India can still remember the Oscars buzz created by Lagaan which reached the final nominations for the Best Foreign Film in the year 2002 Oscars.

Kiran narrated how the crew waiting for news, using inherent tools such as newspapers since internet was a luxury the crew could not afford at that time. Now, with Laapataa Ladies, Kiran has achieve the same goals he once dreamt while hoping that the film will win the Oscar award for its campaign journey. Capitalizing on the social taboo to introduce its lead characters, Laapataa Ladies showcases Kiran’s producing company, Kindling Pictures, and Aamir Khan Productions. Starring talented actresses, this movie is now available on Netflix India.
