Origin of the World Smile Day

World Smile Day was founded by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist in Massachusetts, who designed the yellow smiley face in 1963. A rather simple design, it gained its significance as a symbol of happiness around the world. But with the passage of time, as the popularity of the smiley face grew and the commercialization of the very same started, Harvey Ball felt that the original meaning behind the smiley face was being lost. He instituted World Smile Day in 1999 with a motto: “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.”

Importance of World Smile Day

It is essential because it reminds people of small acts of kindness in their daily life. A smile is free, effortless, and a global feeling, but its impact is capable of being extremely profound. One’s smile not only uplifts the person receiving it but also improves the mood and well-being of the one offering it.

On this day, one can encourage smiles, distribute random acts of kindness, do all that can be done in contributing to making the world a better place. It creates happiness and positive energy regardless of its magnitude.

This can take place through sharing smiles, doing good deeds, or helping in many other ways. These could be volunteering to compliment that person or maybe just smiling at someone passing by. Small acts make a big impact.

In a world dominated by negativity, World Smile Day also reminds us of the goodness that comes with such kindness and joy in a simple smile.
