Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October every year to mark the birth anniversary of one of India’s greatest leaders, the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. His principles of non-violence (Ahimsa) and truth (Satyagraha) were instrumental in India’s fight for independence against British rule. In 2024, the 155th Gandhi Jayanti is going to be celebrated in honor of his timeless contributions to the world.

History of Gandhi Jayanti
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He led many non-violent movements across his life period. Some of the major movements were the Salt March in 1930 and Quit India Movement in 1942 that contributed greatly to India’s independence campaign. His philosophy inspired non-violent movements throughout the world. These helped world leaders: Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, among others.
It was declared a national holiday in India, and it is also recognized worldwide. In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly declared October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence to further establish Gandhi as an icon of peace, however frozen in time.
Significance of Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti reminds one of peacefulness and the non-violent approach towards social and political transformation. This day gives plentiful space for reflection on his understanding of truth, tolerance, and individual self-reliance and how these values stand applicable today.
His principles guide much of the work towards resolving conflicts, upholding human rights and social justice to this day.
Facts and Celebration
On Gandhi Jayanti, prayer services are conducted in schools and government institutions as well as in the various community organisations spread all over India. Seminars and discussions on the life and message of Gandhi take place. His statues are garlanded and his favourite hymns like “Raghupati Raghav” sung at the functions.
In 2024, cultural programs like a replication of the significant events of Gandhi’s life will be conducted throughout the country. People also engage in cleanliness campaigns under the “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India) dream by Gandhi.
