Scammer Impersonating CJI Requests Rs 500 for Cab Fare; SC Takes Action

Scam Alert: Fraudster Poses as CJI DY Chandrachud Seeking ₹500 for Cab Fare; Supreme Court Files Complaint Amid Rising Cyber Crime Threats
A relatively new twist in a world full of cybercriminals, a recent incident occurred where a conman impersonated the Chief Justice of India CJI DY Chandrachud and defrauded someone. A recent one that went viral on social media where a man posing as the CJI of India cheated people sending an urgent message for ₹500 for a cab fare which he needed since he was stuck at Connaught Place. The message, purportedly sent from an iPad, read: “ “Hello, I am CJI and we have an urgent meeting at the collegium and I am stuck at Connaught Place. Can you send me ₹500 for a cab? I will return the money once I reach the court.” The message was fake but it was designed to give a feel of an emergency so that it would not be refuted.

The Supreme Court of India got to know of this scam, made a complaint to the cyber crime cell on August 27 following directions of CJI Chandrachud. People have expressed reactions from disbelief, to mockery by pointing to the lack of credibility of the scam, including the ‘Sent from iPad’.

Such scams also increase in number more than other types of cybercrimes, especially in India, because instances of fraud are on the rise. Such crimes are said to be sponsored from Southeast Asia as the region is well known for sponsoring most of the internet frauds I4C. During the elaboration of how the social media platforms work, Rajesh Kumar, the CEO of I4C added information about how scammers use fake job offers for luring victims before engaging them into Investment frauds and other scams. These activities include numerous financial transactions which are usually facilitated by account reactivation, creation of fake accounts, use of bitcoins and hawala, among others. Kumar elaborated and said that these crimes are very serious and many people have lost large sums of money through these elaborate scams.
