West Bengal Gripped by 12-Hour BJP Bangla Bandh Today: Protests Over Police Brutality During Nabanna Abhijan Spark Widespread Clashes and Political Controversy
Today, West Bengal is undergoing a massive transformation as the BJP is implementing the 12 hours bandh from 6 am to 6 pm demanding the end of what the BJP describes as ‘brutal’ acts of force against protestors during the Nabanna Abhijan – a protest march towards the West Bengal state secretariat in Kolkata. The bandh occurs against the backdrop of violence and call for strike that was observed during the Tuesday rally.
The Nabanna Abhijan was initiated by the students in West Bengal via the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and it seconded by the Sangrami Joutha Mancha which is a group of state government employees demanding that their DA be fixed at par with the central government employees. Starting from College Square in Kolkata, the rally soon started facing major disruptions when demonstrators attempted to break through barriers towards Nabanna, the state secretariat.

Dusty skirmishes developed when protesters confronted police forces at several areas like MG Road, Hastings Road, near Princep Ghat, Santragachi and Howrah Maidan. More than 200 people were detained, out of them 126 were identified as members of Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj with 33 of them being females. In order to control the situation the police force had to resort to the use of lathi charges, water cannons, and tear gas and 29 policemen and some protestors were injured.
To the anarchy, Union Minister and the West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumder led the shutdown called demanding the condemnation of the Kolkata Police. BJP President JP Nadda criticized the police actions labeling it as the state’s incompetence in upholding democracy and charged CM Mamata Banerjee of endorsing violence and stifering justice.

While the BJP has called a bandh to protest against the incidents of violence, TMC, under the leadership of Kunal Ghosh has condemned the same stating it as a way of creating divergence. Ghosh said that the violent elements, which emerged in the BJP ranks and the call given for a shutdown, were to escalate the disturbances.
As the city grapples with the effects of the bandh, the BJP’s allegations and the TMC’s counterclaims highlight the deepening political rift over the handling of the Nabanna Abhijan. The situation underscores the volatile nature of West Bengal’s political landscape, where protests and counter-protests frequently turn into significant disruptions.
