IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack – Netflix’s Upcoming Limited Series Chronicles India’s Most Harrowing Plane Hijacking Starring Vijay Varma and Naseeruddin Shah

The long-awaited limited series from India dubbed “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” is scheduled for release on Netflix on August 29, and the recently released trailer gives quite an exciting view of one of the most tragic incidents in aviation history in India. Featuring Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapur and Naseerudin Shah on board, the series has been written based on the book Flight Into Fear authored by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury. Vijay Varma will be playing a pilot, which gives the audience a feel of the hijack situation.

The plot of the film is based on the actual kidnapping of the Indian Airlines flight IC 814 on December, 24, 1999. The aircraft having flown only for forty minutes from Kathmandu was hijacked by five terrorists. In the one week period, the plane was flown from Kathmandu to Amritsar in India for refueling and then taken to Taliban laden Kandahar in Afghanistan. It came to a halt when all the 180 passengers were regained on December 31, 2000.

The six-part series has been presented as the heart-stopping drama that puts the viewers into the seat of the passengers and members of the crew. Rendering it highly intense, the series portrays a team in India struggling to decipher the Hijackers’ demands while the lives of people on board are in stake.
