Supreme Court to Hear High-Profile Case of Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Amid Nationwide Protests and Calls for CBI Investigation
The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a crucial matter relating to the brutal gang rape and killing of a postgraduate medical student in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 am and will be chaired by CJ DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. This case, officially titled “In Re: The ‘alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and related issue,’ has gotten the nation talking as protests intensify.

The medical student whose dead body was found with multiple signs of violence in a hospital seminar hall on August 9 sparked outrage and protests across the country. Kneeling for two weeks, doctors have been demanding justice to be done now no less than to prevent it in the future. They are urging their audiences to demand the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the issues to their uttermost and ensure that the offenders face serious consequences.

Before this, the victim’s family had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a change of police jurisdiction on the grounds of dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s handling of the case, and the High Court ordered the case to be handed over to the CBI. The high court was very critical of the role of the state especially in its inability to contain the follow up riots, where there was a procession of 7000 people at the hospital. With everyone’s eyes on the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, its activities will define the further progress of justice for the victim, inclusion of the medical profession concerns into the legislation.
