PM Modi and Bangladesh Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus Discuss Safety of Hindus Amidst Political Turmoil and Assure Protection for Minorities
On Friday, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a telephone conversation with the interim leader of Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus. The discussion arose after a Sheikh Hasina overthrow that has augmented political tension in Bangladesh. During the call, both the leaders elaborate on the situation in the country now and the security of communities, such as the Hindu one.
For instance, PM Modi in a post on different platform, X (ex Twitter) highlighted India’s interest in the Bangladesh as a ‘democratic, stable, peaceful and a progressive’ neighbouring country. He also pointed the fact that Yunus had the confidence in the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. This assurance is especially reassuring considering that there have been recent reports of attacks on the Hindu community.

These concerns of PM Modi for the Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh were repeated during his address on the occasion of the Ides of India where he addressed that the minorities should feel safe in Bangladesh. The Prime Minister’s appeal for order and non-violence in Bangladesh shows India’s concern about the situation in the neighboring state and its desire to maintain friendly relations with it while protecting its people.

The position in Bangladesh is still fragile and the care taker government is under pressure on the issue of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The acting Minister of Bangladesh’s foreign affairs, Touhid Hossain, was cited as saying that as more legal cases are brought against Hasina, Bangladesh may ask for her extradition from India. These situations present potential diplomatic risk to both countries especially in their efforts to deal with such developments.
