Not Atishi, Lt Governor picks AAP’s Kailash Gahlot for August 15 flag hoisting
The lieutenant governor and the elected government diffused a possible conflict on Tuesday when the latter approved Kailash Gahlot, the home minister, to lead the national flag at the state’s Independence Day celebration on August 15 at Chhatrasal Stadium.
“Choosing an elected representative over an appointed one” is how the AAP expressed its appreciation for the LG’s decision, which upholds democratic principles.
LG VK Saxena nominated Gahlot, ignoring the AAP government’s request to permit education minister Atishi to hoist the tricolor in Arvind Kejriwal’s absence. Saxena claimed that the home department was responsible for matters pertaining to police and that the ceremonial march-past parade that follows the hoisting of the national flag was the responsibility of Delhi Police.

The Union home ministry’s clarification on Friday over the impasse resulting from the “peculiar circumstances of absence of CM” was requested by LG’s secretariat, which was tasked with issuing guidelines about the celebration of Independence Day at the federal level and in the states. According to sources, the ministry gave LG permission to designate a minister to raise the flag.
Ashish Kundra, LG’s principal secretary, wrote a note to chief secretary Naresh Kumar on Tuesday. “It gives the lieutenant governor great pleasure to propose Kailash Gahlot, minister of home and GNCTD, to raise the national flag at the state’s Independence Day festivities at Chhatrasal Stadium. Accordingly, necessary preparations can be undertaken.”
