History –
Organ transplantation began in the early 20th century, and its development was marked by several important turning points. In 1954, Ronald Lee Herrick underwent a pioneering treatment led by Dr. Joseph Murray to donate a kidney to his identical twin brother, marking the first successful kidney transplant.

Importance And Facts –
August 3, 1994, was a historic day in India’s history of organ donation since it was the first successful transplant of a deceased donor’s heart. This event was a turning point in the country’s organ transplantation history and set the stage for further developments in the area. In 2010, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare observed the first National Organ Donation Day on November 27 in India.
To mark the anniversary of India’s first successful deceased donor heart transplant, the celebration was moved to August 3 in 2023. Essentially, World Organ Donation Day dispels these myths by offering factual information and promoting deliberate decision-making.
