An Indian tourist arriving at Chennai International Airport from Bangkok, Thailand, saw up to 22 exotic animal species confiscation by customs inspectors, the officials said on Monday. Mohamed Meera Sardharali, a passenger on a Thai Air Asia aircraft from Bangkok to Chennai on August 10, had the animals taken from her by the Customs department’s Air Intelligence Unit, according to a statement from the department. One Redfoot tortoise, two Green Tree Pythons, one White-lipped Python, five Indo-Chene box turtles, nine Four-eyed Turtles, one Keeled Box Turtle, one Siamang Gibbon, and two Sunda flying Lemurs are among the confiscated animals.
Mohamed Meera Sardharali, a passenger on a Thai Air Asia aircraft from Bangkok to Chennai on August 10, had the animals taken from her by the Customs department’s Air Intelligence Unit, according to a statement from the department. “The species are listed in Schedule IV of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972,” it said.

Sardharali was taken into detention and placed under judicial supervision in accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the Customs Act. “All of the extinct exotic wildlife species were securely turned over to airlines so they could be returned to their home countries. Additional research is underway,” the department stated in a statement.
