The son of Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina has denied a media story that stated her mother had charged that the US was plotting to overthrow the government in her country. He also said that his mother would have brought up this topic in her speech if given the opportunity. A media report had said Hasina planned to address the people prior to her resignation as prime minister of Bangladesh and her subsequent departure on August 5 amid violent student protests. She would have charged that the United States was plotting to engineer a regime change in Bangladesh in her address that was never delivered. Sajeed Wazeb, Hasina’s son, has now completely refuted the media claim in a social media post. He went so far as to call the report “false and fabricated”.
As to a media report, Hasina has stated that the United States had intended to depose her due to her refusal to cede St. Martin Island. According to Hasina, obtaining this island might have given the US more sway over the Bay of Bengal.
In order to avoid witnessing the coffin procession, I tendered my resignation. I resigned as premier because I would not allow them to seize power over the corpses of students. If I had given up Saint Martin Island’s sovereignty and let America rule the Bay of Bengal, I may still be in charge today.
Speaking to the student demonstrators involved in the anti-quota movement, she said that her words had been misrepresented to provoke them. “I want to reiterate this to Bangladesh’s younger kids. I’ve never referred to you as Razakars. Instead, I misspoke in order to provoke you. I would like you to view the entire day’s video. She emphasized, “Conspirers have exploited your innocence and used you to destabilize the nation.”
