On Friday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved 8 new railway projects in seven states.

committee on economic affairs Friday endorsed eight new railway line projects across seven states, those are Odisha, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar and Andhra with an estimated expense of Rs 24,657 crore to avail connectivity, ease of travelling and may ensure a low logistic cost, less import of oil and per resettlement, a lower carbon intensity. Out of them, one is for making a rail connectivity to Ajanta Caves, a Unesco approved world heritage site and will help in the development of tourism.
“Tribal areas of Odisha will benefit majorly through the projects,” Vaishnaw said.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, the railway minister, opined that the projects will align the unconnected regions and boost up rail transport systems to aid the supply chain and substantially boost up the economy. It will be completed by the fiscal year 2030-31 for above stated projects. Out of these approved projects four are specific only to Odisha.
The projects will axe the principal transport arteries of commerce for goods comprising of agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, bauxite, limestone, aluminium powder, granite, ballast and containers.
The plans will entail 14 districts in Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana and Bengal and add 900 km to existing network of Indian Railways. As per the assured by the government, a total of 64 new stations will be constructed, out of which the six districts of East Singhbum, Bhadadri, Kothagudem, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Rayagada, 510 villages and 40 lakh population, will get improved connectivity.
Vaishnaw added stating once the projects have been completed, railways would get incremental freight traffic in excess of 140 MTPY. As loading of minerals shifts to railways from the existing means of transport, over 767 crore kg of CO2 savings will occur.
Dedicating the new rail line, the minister said that the new rail corridor – parallel to the eastern coast – to be created under Dedicated Freight Corridor will span Warangal, Bhadrachalam, Titagarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Tata & Asansol. This corridor will involve the following seven states of the East namely.
