Speaking to Dr Priyanka Singh, MBBS, MS, DNB, FAICO, Consultant and Eye Surgeon, Neytra Eye Centre, New Delhi was of the opinion that to enjoy monsoons while protecting eyes from infections, the following precautions should be taken. Eye Trouble during the Monsoon Season

Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye it is a kind of infection that affects the eyes primarily by bacteria and /or viruses.
Some of them are redness, swelling, yellow creamy discharge, and burning feelings. All these are known to be worsened by humidity.

Advice: These are measures against touching face, especially eyes, washing of hands frequently, and attempting not to look at hands. A visit to the ophthalmologist physician at the onset of the earliest manifestations is recommended.

Eyelid Infections: High temperatures and high humidity levels cause a raise in the instances of relative eyelid
Infections like styes or chalazions are a part of dermatological conditions that affect the quality of one’s eyesight depending on their severity.

Advice: However, it is best to refrain from touching or scratching the eyes and it is equally wise not to share combs, toothbrushes, and other items that are used on the face or head.

Darcyocystitis: This is a condition that results from the blockage of tear ducts that flows from eye to the nasal area thus causes microbial infection, inflammation and pain to the inner part of the eye. Some of the results are as followed: The subjects with frequently tearing eyes are sensitive to the humidity.

Advice: If you have such symptoms, then it is recommended that you seek the services of an oculoplastic surgeon.

Dry Eyes: However, it is worthy of note that dry eyes could be manifested in any season but most dominant during the monsoon season due to disturbances in the tear. Dry eyes are likely to develop allergies and infections because of the secretions that are produced.

Advice: Repetitive lubrication with prescribed eye drop.

Crucial Guidelines for Eye Care in the Monsoon

Shield your eyes from precipitation:

Enjoy the weather, but keep in mind that contaminants, bacteria, viruses, and irritants can be found in rainwater. Rinse your eyes with clean water if rainwater gets inside of them.

Take Care of Eyewear:

Keep your glasses and contact lenses clean. Keep contact lens solution on hand, and periodically wipe your glasses with a fresh handkerchief or linen cloth.

Hands should be washed often:

It takes physical contact—not staring at an infected person—to transmit conjunctivitis. Hand washing is a good way to avoid getting sick.
