Ingredients
- 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal (yellow lentils)
- 1/2 cup rice (preferably short grain)
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 small carrot, diced
- 1/2 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
- 1 medium potato, diced
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 4 cups water
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped for garnish
How to make?
- Rinse the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water until the water is clear. This step is critical for removing extra starch and other contaminants. – Dice the carrot and potato, then finely cut the green chile and ginger.
- In a pressure cooker, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat.- Add cumin seeds and allow to sputter.
- Next, add asafoetida, grated ginger, and green chile (if using).- Add the curry leaves and cook for a few seconds, until fragrant.
- Combine the diced carrot, potato, and green peas. Sauté the veggies for 2–3 minutes.
- Transfer the washed rice and moong dal to the cooker. Stir thoroughly to incorporate the spices and vegetables.
- Combine turmeric powder and salt. Mix thoroughly to coat all ingredients with the spices.
- Add 4 cups of water and whisk everything together.
- Close the pressure cooker lid and cook over high heat until you hear two whistles. Then reduce the heat to low and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let the pressure to dissipate naturally.
- Once the pressure has been removed, cautiously open the lid.
- Garnish and serve hot.
