The History of Fathers Day

The Fathers Day observance in the United States began when Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of a Civil War veteran, wished to honor all fathers worldwide. Sonora Smart Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, had six children, including her. He was a single dad. Sonora chose his birthdate, June 5, 1982, to commemorate Father’s Day. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis, the woman who founded Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, her petition received little support from her church, so she had to seek assistance from other local churches. Eventually, the date was changed from June 5 to the third Sunday of June. The first Father’s Day occurred in 1910.

How is Fathers Day celebrated?

Father’s Day is one of the most significant days of the year for children to show their love and appreciation for their father. They can create a note, purchase a meaningful gift, bake a cake, prepare their favorite dish, receive flowers and chocolates, visit their favorite restaurants, spend quality time with them, and much more. Most children have greater relationships with their moms than with their fathers, so this day presents an excellent opportunity for them to improve their bond with their father.
