Age was just a number : Zohra Seghal
Legendary actress and dancer Zohra Sehgal breathed her last on the 10th of July at a private hospital in New Delhi. The veteran was 102 years ‘young’ and known for her wonderful performances in both theatre and cinema.
Saawariya and Cheeni Kum were the last films she appeared in (2007). Two years back she had celebrated her 100th birthday on 27th of April with much innocence and excitement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered and tweeted about the veteran actress, “Prolific & full of life. Zohra Sehgal made a mark through her acting which is admired across generations. Saddened on her demise.”

With a career spanning over sixty years she has worked with a buffet of actors ranging from Ashok Kumar to Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan to Salman Khan and Dev Anand to Shah Rukh Khan. A child at heart she was loved by all, for her sense of humour and way of living life, enjoying each moment of it. The doyenne of Indian theatre was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan (second highest civilian honour) in the year 2010. Sehgal Appa as she was fondly known succumbed to a cardiac arrest around four in the evening at Max hospital, Delhi and around 4.30 PM she left for her heavenly abode.
Some of her most appreciated and acknowledged work:
• Neecha Nagar (1946)
• Bhaji on the Beach (1992)
• Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)
• Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
• Saawariya and Cheeni Kum (2007)
Born in 1912 she started as a dancer in choreographer Uday Shankar’s troupe and performed across the globe from 1935 to 1943. In 2012 the country lost a patriarch in A.K Hangal and now we have lost a matriarch in Zohra Sehgal. The demise of such a loving personality is a huge loss for the whole film fraternity.
“Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102 years. What a journey and what an immensely lovable co-star! Prayers for her blessed soul!!” tweeted legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Over the years, she graced us with her beautiful performances in numerous television shows, plays, films and advertisements. In 2008, she was also named the ‘Laadli of the Century’ by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) – Laadli Media Awards.
Certainly, the naughtiest naani on celluloid.
