According to the SCMP report, the phenomenon of a new type of marriage in Japan that does not involve any relationships like love or sex was set in a strange and fast pace that the new generation of young people prefer. The article coined a new term of the trend ‘friendship marriage’.

The report has defined friendship marriage as, “a cohabitating relationship based on shared interests and values”. Although, people do not marry who they love or share a romantic bond; they prefer to live with their like-minded friends and be loved.
According to the norms of this kind of partnership, partners can be legally married and can live together as husband and wife. In a friendship marriage, both parties are also free to have love relationships with other people if they find a common understanding. Besides, they could go for artificial insemination to get kids.

Another friend from the same set of relationships who was in a marriage of friendship also told her story. She added that she was a fantastic friend but ‘maybe (was) not right girlfriend’. She stated that it is no use being with someone who likes different activities or diversified taste.

The friendship marriage is an escape for those who are not willing to marry but are doing to show a “stability and maturity” in front of society or fulfill their parents’ wishes according to the news report of SCMP. Additionally, the survey found that over 70% of the partners in friendship marriages had chosen the relationship in order to have children, as it is still difficult for a single woman to adopt the motherhood role in Japan.
