Michaung Cyclone Threatens Andhra: Alert Elevated

Andhra Pradesh is currently under a heightened state of alert as the impending Michaung Cyclone gears up to make landfall today along the Bapatla coast. The storm, having progressed north-northwestwards at a pace of seven kmph over the past six hours, has raised concerns in eight specific areas of Andhra Pradesh: Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada.

Cyclone Michaung: Noon Landfall

The storm is anticipated to reach land around noon, bringing with it wind speeds potentially reaching up to 100 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported, “Severe Cyclonic Storm MICHAUNG (pronounced as MIGJAUM) over Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts moved north-northwestwards.” The IMD’s forecast outlines the system’s trajectory, with an expected crossing between Nellore and Machilipatnam near Bapatla.

The repercussions of the storm have already been felt in Tamil Nadu, experiencing heavy rainfall and waterlogging. Tragically, five individuals lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents in Chennai. To mitigate risks, educational institutions and government offices across designated districts have been closed. Transportation services, including trains and Air India flights to and from Chennai, face disruptions due to excessive waterlogging and bridge submergence.
