Tragic Losses and Safety Shortcomings
Among the casualties were two minors, three women, and one man. Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar revealed that the building, constructed in 2006 under the Slum Rehabilitation scheme, lacked a fire-fighting system, and the outdated lift system contributed to the significant spread of smoke throughout the building.
The fire was first reported at the Jay Bhavani building in Goregaon’s MG road and was finally extinguished after nearly four hours of intense efforts, at around 6:54 a.m.
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and announced a government contribution of ₹5 lakhs to support them. He also assured the injured victims of government-funded medical treatment.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his sympathy to the affected families and affirmed that all necessary assistance was being provided. An ongoing investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha personally visited the HBT hospital to assess the situation and pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. A high-level committee, comprising representatives from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, and fire officials, will be established to submit a comprehensive report within the next 15 days.
Preliminary findings indicated that clothes and scrap godown on the ground floor may have been the source of the fire.
Eyewitness Manish Chaturvedi reported detecting a burning odour in the air, which led to the discovery of the fire in the neighbouring building. Promptly, safety measures were put in place within his building complex, and the fire services were promptly alerted.
The response to the fire involved the deployment of eight fire engines, five jumbo water tankers, three automatic turntables, one turntable ladder, a quick response vehicle, and an ambulance. Ladders and Breathing Apparatus Sets (BA Sets) were utilized in the rescue efforts.
A coordinated response effort involving multiple fire officials, municipal corporation personnel, and NGO staff was executed at the scene to effectively manage the crisis and provide essential assistance in rescue and relief operations.
