Additional BSF and CRPF personnel deployed in Manipur due to overcrowded jails, amid a weapon return deadline issued by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Ethnic clashes displaced 50,000 residents.

Manipur Bolsters Security with BSF and CRPF Amidst Jail Overcrowding, Ethnic Clashes Displace Thousands

In the troubled region of Manipur, several hundred additional security forces have been deployed over the past three days. Approximately 400 extra personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been dispatched to Manipur due to concerns about overcrowding in the state’s regular jails.

These additional personnel were transported to Manipur via C 130J and A 321 aircraft, as confirmed by an official source. The state government initiated the establishment of a temporary prison at the BSF’s subsidiary training centre in Churachandpur, following the declaration of the premises as a temporary prison under the Prisoner’s Act of 1984.

Weapon Return Deadline

The decision to create a new prison facility stems from Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh’s call for individuals to return stolen weapons within a 15-day window. After this period, both central and state security forces would launch an operation to recover these arms. Reportedly, out of the 5,668 weapons and nearly 600,000 rounds of ammunition looted from government armouries in May and June, only 1,329 weapons and around 14,000 rounds of ammunition have been retrieved so far. The government has expressed willingness to show leniency to those who surrender the weapons within the specified timeframe.

Presently, Sajiwa Central Jail in Manipur, with a capacity of 850, houses

around 700 inmates, while the women’s jail in Imphal accommodates 115 inmates against a capacity of 350. Before the onset of ethnic clashes on May 3, Sajiwa Central Jail held fewer than 100 prisoners, and the women’s jail housed only three.

Ethnic Clashes Displace 50K

The ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meiteis communities erupted on May 3 in Manipur during a protest against a court-mandated alteration to the state’s reservation policy. This violence quickly spread throughout the state, leading to the displacement of nearly 50,000 people who fled their burning homes and neighbourhoods, seeking refuge in the jungles.
