Reminders when we are struggling in a relationship

Relationships can be a lot of hard work and it's not something that grows in a period of one day. It's something that can take years to build, so having patience and taking the time to resolve issues is very important.

Struggling in a relationship? Do not forget these!

Every relationship can have it’s natural up and downs. However, it’s important that whenever you are struggling in a relationship, you do not give up on it. Here are some things to remember even when you are struggling in a relationship.

  1. It is not the end. Just because you are struggling does not mean that you have to end the relationship. It is probably an indication that you and your partner need to sit down and have a candid conversation.
  2.  Always remember that open and honest communication in a relationship is extremely important. It’s important that you express your feelings, concerns, and thoughts and also allow your partner a safe space to do that.
  3. Avoid blaming each other and try to understand each other more. Listen actively to what the other person is trying to say.
  4. Conversations in a relationship are not just about hearing, but actually listening to the other person, almost like a natural lie detector test
  5. Relationships can be a lot of hard work and it’s not something that grows in a period of one day. It’s something that can take years to build, so having patience and taking the time to resolve issues is very important.
  6. It is OK to want your own space when trying to understand or deal with something, but putting this across nicely to your partner, explaining it to them, and taking your own space to heal and feel better is completely acceptable.
  7. Always try to understand things from your partner’s point of view. Having empathy helps build stronger connections and relations.
  8. One of the most important things in a relationship is to have clear boundaries. A lot of times the merging of boundaries is what leads to problems in a relationship. So make sure that even at the onset of the relationship, you define these boundaries.
  9. When you’re struggling in a relationship, it is important that you reflect on all the good things about the relationship in things that have made you happy in the past.
  10. If problems still continue, it’s always advisable to seek professional help, such as couples therapy or counselling. Sitting down with a neutral third party or a friend who understands both of you can also help you keep your relationship safe.
