Monsoon Session 2023: Lok Sabha adjourned sine die, passed 22 legislations in 17 sittings !

"In the 12th session of the 17th Lok Sabha's Monsoon Session, 22 bills were passed in 17 sittings with a 45% productivity. A significant discussion on a no-confidence motion and transformative criminal justice bills took place, along with a robust debate on Manipur violence."

On August 11, the Monsoon session came to an end when Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House sine die. During the Monsoon session, 17 sittings took place. During this period, the House functioned for 44 hours and 15 minutes. 22 bills were passed during the session and 20 were introduced. The monsoon session’s productivity was 45%, the Speaker informed the Lok Sabha just before the House was adjourned.

While the Rajya Sabha functioned for 50 hours and 21 minutes in its 17 sittings. And the Rajya Sabha’s monsoon session’s productivity was approximately 63 percent.

On August 10, the discussion around the motion of No confidence which was moved by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, was defeated by voice vote in the Lower House. That involved a total of 60 members and lasted for nearly 20 hours.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha hours before it adjourned to replace the three laws that form the foundation of the criminal justice system. He claimed the proposed laws would transform the nation’s criminal justice system and put the spirit of protecting the rights of Indian citizens at the forefront.

These three new bills are :

  • Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023;
  • Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023;
  • Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill, 2023

The ruling and the opposition parties had a vigorous debate over the violence in Manipur and other hot-button topics during these three days of the motion.
