MPs Demand: Suspension of all Business, Discuss Manipur

Opposition demands suspension of all business in Parliament for urgent discussion on Manipur violence, while the government faces a contentious bill and seeks support from other parties.

Opposition seeks urgent discussion on Manipur violence, requests of regular parliamentary suspension of all business.

The monsoon session of Parliament commenced today amid growing concern over the situation in Manipur. Opposition MPs have submitted an adjournment motion urging the suspension of all business to discuss the ongoing violence in the region.

Contentious bill divides Parliament:

The government has an ambitious legislative agenda for the session, including 31 bills, including one aimed at replacing the Ordinance that grants the Centre control over bureaucrats in Delhi. This particular bill has sparked a major face-off between the government and the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking support from other parties against it.

Bill divides Rajya Sabha:

The government seems to have a numerical advantage in the Rajya Sabha, with the BJP and allies holding 105 members. The Opposition, consisting of 105 members, is vehemently against the bill. The support of certain parties like Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, the Janata Dal Secular, and the Telugu Desam Party will be crucial.

PM Urged to Address Manipur:

The Opposition has also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the Parliament on the situation in Manipur, which has been facing ethnic violence since May 3. A disturbing incident of two tribal women being paraded naked further fueled the outrage.

The Centre has assured its readiness to discuss the Manipur situation in Parliament, and the monsoon session will continue until August 11, with a total of 17 sittings. The session will begin in the old Parliament Building but will later shift to the new one, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May, offering more space and modern facilities.
