Self-proclaimed spiritual guru Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, also known as Bageshwar Dham Sarkar or Maharaj, made headlines last Saturday during his visit to Vadodara. The occasion was the grand Divya Darbar held at the Navlakhi Ground in the city. Shastri, who serves as the peethadhish of Bageshwar Dham Sarkar, a religious pilgrimage site in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, is known for his recitation of stories at the holy site. However, he has faced accusations of deceiving people through mentalism.
As a devoted disciple of Rambhadracharya, Shastri has gained recognition for his teachings on the Ramcharitmanas and Shiva Purana. He claims to possess charismatic powers attained through intense sadhna performed by his followers. While staying at the Laxmi Narayan resort prior to the event, Shastri engaged in a media interaction to discuss his life and political aspirations.
When questioned about his political ambitions, Shastri vehemently denied any intentions of pursuing an active political career. In the presence of Vijay Shah, the President of the local BJP unit, he confidently declared, “Who would abandon the invaluable wealth of spirituality, valued in crores, for a mere Rs 10 political career?”

Moreover, Shastri restated his stance on the establishment of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and proposed amendments to the Indian Constitution. He further clarified a recent controversy surrounding his remark referring to the people of Gujarat as ‘pagal’ or ‘crazy’. According to him, the term should not be interpreted as an insult to mental health but rather as a representation of passionate individuals. He suggested that those who took offense to the word could interpret it in the context of mental illness if they wished.
