Indian Cinema at Oscars: ‘Naatu Naatu’ song and documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ win Oscars


Indian cinema at the Oscars made unprecedented history. Indian cinema sets its foot on the global stage by winning 2 Oscars. RRR’s song ‘Naatu Naatu’ won Best Original Song and the Indian documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Both movies showcased Indian culture and the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ is the composition of Indian dance forms that are unique. The SS Rajamouli-directed RRR is a tale of two revolutionaries who fought the British in the 1920s. This film is packed with action, adventure, music and dance that entertains the audience.

This song has become viral on YouTube with 124 million views and still counting. This campaign by Rajamouli acquired a special significance since the RRR team continued its efforts to bring home the coveted golden statuette. The Telugu-language RRR had submitted the film for Oscars nomination in 14 categories but made it to just one category, the ‘Best Original Song’ in the final Academy awards shortlist. RRR continues to set the global stage on fire by winning several prominent awards the Golden Globe Award for Best Song, five Hollywood Critics Association Awards and two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Elephant Whisperers directed by Kartiki Gonsalves is a heartwarming documentary about Bomman and Bellie, a couple belonging to an indigenous tribe in south India, who devotedly look after orphaned baby elephants named Raghu and Ammu, forging a family like no other.

It is the first time India had two productions getting nominated at the Oscars. Another highlight was the presence of Indian celebrity presenter, and actor Deepika Padukone at the Academy Awards announced the nominations. It has made Indian film lovers proud and a sense of euphoria is blowing us all over.
