The 61st National Awards ceremony is an upcoming event during which the Directorate of Film Festivals presents its annual National Film Awards to honour the Best Film of 2013 of the Indian Cinema. The ceremony will be held on May3, 2014. However, on 16th April, the list of awardee was announced at a press conference held at National Media Centre.
‘Ship of Thesus’, directed by Anand Gandhi was awarded the ‘Best Feature Film’ which depicts issues of metaphysical belief and intricate morality in a world full of contradictions.
‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ was presented to Gulzar. The award is given to recognise the contributions of film personalities towards the development of India Cinema.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag grabbed the ‘Best popular Film’ award in this list too.
Tuhya Dharma Kancha (Marathi) won the ‘Best Film on social issues’ and, Perariyathavar (Malayalam) won the ‘Best Film on Environment Conservation’.
Kaphal (Hindi), a touching story of two boys set in beautiful mountains of Uttrakhand village bagged ‘Best Children’s Film’. It was produced by the Children’s Film Society of India.
Hansal Mehta was awarded the ‘Best Direction’ for the movie ‘Shahid’ (Hindi) which is a remarkably handled film tracing the true story of a slain human right activist and a lawyer, Shahid Azmi in the backdrop of communal violence in Mumbai.
While, the ‘Best Actor’ award went to Raj Kumar Rao for Shahid (Hindi) and Suraj Venjaramoodu for Perariyathavar (Malayalam), the ‘ Best Actress’ awardee was Geetanjali Thapa for Liar’s Dice (Hindi).
Somnath Avghade who played the role of a Dalit teenager in Fandry (Marathi), ultimately drawing up the realities of life got the ‘Best Child’ artist award. Along with it, Sadhana of Thanga Meengal (Tamil) was categorised under the same award for playing the role of a dyslexic child with sensitivity.
For extraordinary blend in language and conversations covering day-to-day philosophy, anxieties and emotions, Sumitra Bhave bagged the prize for Dialogues under ‘Best Screenplay’ category.
Besides, ‘Best Feature’ film award was conferred to movies in different languages specified in the Schedule Eight of the Constitution. And, yet few languages which are not otherwise listed in Schedule Eight like Khasi, Sherdukpen and others. ‘RI’, a complex tale of insurgency and reconciliation set in the turbulent North East state of Meghalaya. ‘Rangbhoomi’, a non-feature film was also in the winning list.
Cinema Ga Cinema (Telugu), a book written by the Veteran film Journalist- Shri Nandagopal was given the ‘Best Book on Cinema’ award for his extensive exposure and experience in the film industry which lends richness to the book.
All the winners were presented with a ‘Swarna Kamal’ (Golden Lotus Award), or a ‘Rajat Kamal’ (Silver Lotus Award), a certificate and a cash prize.
