Sanjay Gandhi
Sanjay Gandhi, the Congress leader and son of Indira Gandhi was amongst the prominent Indians who perished in an air crash, in June 1980. He was flying a Pitts s-2a aircraft in Delhi. Sanjay Gandhi held both an instructor’s rating and a commercial pilot’s license.

Senior congressmen, Madhav Rao Scindia, father of the current union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, also lost his life in an air crash. The senior Scindia was flying in a chartered flight. In September 2001 his flight crashed near a village in central Uttar Pradesh claiming his life.

Telugu Desam Party leader and Lok Sabha speaker Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi also known as GMC Balayogi died in a helicopter crash in Andhra Pradesh on 3 March 2002.

YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister died in an air crash involving a twin-engined Bell 430 helicopter. This incident happened in the Nallamala hills of Andhra Pradesh in September 2009. The inquiry committee submitted its report later. It said that the helicopter was not “air-worthy.”
Dorjee Khandu
Dorjee Khandu, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister died in a chopper crash in May 2011 in a remote village in the state. Khandu’s body was recovered five days later after intense search and rescue operations.
O.P. Jindal and Surendra Singh
Noted industrialist and Haryana Power Minister O.P. Jindal, was killed in a helicopter crash while on his way to Chandigarh from Delhi in 2005. Along with Jindal, Surendra Singh, State Agriculture Minister also died in the same crash.
Homi J. Bhabha
The list of prominent names that died in the air accidents includes, scientist Homi J. Bhabha. He was also known as the father of India’s Nuclear Programme. Homi J. Bhabha died when Air India Flight 101 crashed near Mont Blanc on 24 January 1966. Many possible theories were advanced for the air crash. It included a conspiracy theory in which the CIA is involved in order to paralyze India’s Nuclear Programme.

Industrialist Ashok Birla was flying with his wife, Sunanda when they became victims of an air accident. Ashok Birla, his wife, and daughter Sujata perished in an air crash in 1990 in Bengaluru.

This Sooyavansham actress was flying from Bangalore to Karimpur with her brother Amarnath to campaign for BJP. It is said that the actress was pregnant at the time of the tragedy.

Subhash Chandra Bose, is also known as Netaji. After World War II ended, Netaji left for INA headquarters in Singapore with selected comrades. Bose was on board with Lieutenant General Tsunamasa Shidei. He was the vice chief of Japan’s Kwatung army. A day later after an unscheduled halt, the plane crashed in Taipei, Taiwan. And the world was officially told that both men were killed in the crash. However, the plane crash story is still hotly debated.
C. Sangma
Other notable Indians who perished in an air crash include C. Sangma, Meghalaya Community Development Minister who lost his life in a chopper crash in September 2004.
On 10 December 2021, CDS General Bipin Rawat was cremated with full military honours at Delhi’s Brar Square Crematorium. Many political leaders and Military officials paid tribute to the brave hearted. The cremation was performed by Rawat’s daughter.
