The women world champions, who made India proud at the international stage ruled the first week of October. In the ISSF Junior Championship and in World Wrestling Championships, Indian women played a major role in bringing medals home. From Anshu Malik to Sarita Mor, women made headlines this week.
Anshu Malik became the first Indian woman to reach World Championships final
Anshu Malik made headlines on October 6 and became the first Indian woman to reach the World Championships final. The 57 kg champion in making is giving wings to her father’s dreams. The chronicles of wrestling spurred Anshu Malik, as she became the first female wrestler to reach the World Championships finals. This endeavour for Anshu Malik was initiated when she was just 12 years old.
As a kid she told her grandmother that she wants to be a wrestler. However, little did Anshu’s father knew that seven years later she will complete his unfulfilled dream?
It was 2012 when Anshu expressed her wish to be a wrestler just like her younger brother Shubham. In addition, it only took Dharamvir to discern that his Chori was in fact a better wrestler than his son was. Moreover, with the grit Anshu carried, it was not surprising to see that just in 6 months of training. Anshu started defeating girls with 3-4 years of experience. This 19-year-old girl found her inspiration on the mat her father, uncle, and the whole clan used to wrestle on. Her determination can easily be gauged by the fact that Anshu just in four years of training bagged state and national titles. With limited exposure to international competitions, she started marking her presence in the senior circuit. Malik has brought medals in five tournaments and the total number of matches she has played so far is just six.
Sarita Mor win bronze at the World Wrestling Championships
Sarita Mor outclassed Sweden’s Johanna Lindborg to win bronze in the 59kg category at the World Wrestling Championships on Thursday. She became the sixth Indian woman wrestler to win a bronze medal at the World Championships.
Sarita Mor hails from Sonepat, Haryana. She took up wrestling at the age of 12. However, Wrestling was not Mor’s first love. She wanted to play Kabaddi professionally. Soon, she lost her interest due to a strict coach. Sarita has also worked with Indian Railways. This job was a reward for representing India at the domestic and international levels.
In the year 2017, Sarita Mor clinched gold at Asian Championships in the 59kg weight category. She defended her title in the Asian Championship 2021, by winning gold again. She defeated Baatarjavyn Shoovdor of Mongolia in the 2021 Asian Championship.
14-year Naamya Kapoor claimed to fame by winning a Gold medal at ISSF Junior Championship
A 14-year shooter Naamya Kapoor grabbed all eyes after winning a Gold medal at ISSF Junior Championship. On 4 October 2021, she shot ahead of Manu Bhaker in a 25-meter pistol event. With this, Kapoor bagged her first gold and became the youngest shooter in India. Naamya Kapoor studies in Guru Harkrishan Public school, Punjabi Bagh, Delhi. In 2017, Naamya was in sixth grade and caught the eyes of Sabir Khan. She shot 373/400 in a 10-meter air pistol at Delhi State Championship and turned heads to Dr. Karani Singh’s shooting range. In 2019, she added medals at the north zone championship and the national championship.
Naamya inherited the shooting trait from her Uncle Sanjeev Rajput. Sanjeev was a veteran rifle shooter and 3-time Olympian. But 2021 is the year of Naamya Kapoor. However, it is too early to call for Paris 2024. However, She has got herself listed with Manu Bhaker and Chinki Yadav, bestowing India more hope.
