130 crore Indians are proud today as Neeraj Chopra has created history. He brought India’s first medal in track and field. It is also the country’s first gold in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and second in the individual event.

Before him, Abhinav Bindra had won gold in a 10-meter air rifle at the Beijing Olympics.
Chopra stunned everyone right from the start. His throw was 87.03m and his second throw was 87.58m. And this throws a hand gold medal around his neck.

German star Johannes Vetter was everyone’s favorite. Vetter is known for throwing 90 plus meters in the Javelin. But he could not even qualify for the top 8.

Chopra was India’s biggest medal hope but only a few expected him to win gold.

  2. Neeraj is a Junior Commissioned officer (JCO) in the Indian Army.
  3. After winning gold in the 2016 IAAF world U20 championship, he was promoted to Naib Subedar in the Indian Army. He set a world junior record then.
  4. He is also India’s first athlete to win a gold medal in Javelin in 2018 at Commonwealth Games.
  5. He also won a gold medal in the year 2018 at Asian Games.
  6. As per his bio on the Olympics official website, he developed an interest in Javelin throwing by watching people practicing the sport. In 2011, he took up the sport when he was noticed by Jaiveer of Binjhol who is also a javelin thrower.
Neeraj Chopra is a prodigy and we are lucky to have such an outstanding athlete. After a 13 year-long wait, finally, the National Anthem of India was echoing in the entire stadium.
