Bengaluru based NGO, Khoon mobilized 1,500 healthy and safe donations from different parts of India midst the lockdown.
Since the lockdown was announced, many blood donation camps have been cancelled. The blood banks rely on these blood donation drives to procure blood. Due to the pandemic, blood banks were running out of stock. The shortage of blood led to a crisis for hundreds of thousands of thalassemia, blood cancer and others patients.
In the midst of COVID-19, Khoon, a blood donation NGO, has been working relentlessly to end blood scarcity, and ensure that India doesn’t give rise to another crisis.
On March 24, Khoon started a toll-free national emergency helpline number
(1800 890 6465). They also arranged ambulance services and curfew passes
for all willing donors.
From March 24 to April 30, they have mobilized 1,500 healthy and safe donations from different parts of India.
“The biggest challenge is making people aware of the urgency of blood
donation. Plasma treatment is opening people up to the
discourse of blood donation”, Chetan M Gowda, Founder, Khoon.

After losing his teacher due to unavailability of blood, Chetan founded Khoon in 2016 to put an end to the scarcity of blood.
At present, they have a database of more than 1,20,000 blood donors. They have also saved nearly 30, 000 lives in 2019-2020.
The NGO is recognized by renowned institutions like, Facebook, NACO, NBTC, KSBTC, KSAPS and Department of Family and Healthcare, Karnataka Government. Khoon is also the first NGO in Northeastern state to have 24*7 helpline.
