Holi 2019 is around the corner. Preparations for the festival all across the nation is in full swing. It is the festival of color, joy, and happiness. India celebrates Holi with a lot of zeal and people genuinely can’t contain their enthusiasm. But still, there are some do’s and don’ts that we need to keep in mind while playing Holi. Well, Holi brings joy all around. In that case, we also need to take care of the four –leg community around us. We should not forget that they are not immune to the chemical induced gulaal. So, if you have a pet at home or if you are a pet parent to some stray dogs, then here are a few things that you can do to spread awareness.
Here are a few important consequences that can happen to animals if you color them:
1. People mostly use dry colors during Holi and these colors contain chemicals like Mercury Sulfate and metal oxides. These chemicals are known to induce skin allergies in dogs, especially in dogs with short hair. The constant itching can lead to skin rashes.
2. A lot of times stray dogs are hit by water balloons. Most of the time, balloons are filled with colors. The colored water can cause irritation in their skin and can even cause permanent loss of eyesight.
3. Many people smear color powders on their pets during Holi. Little do they know these powders can enter through the nasal tracts of the pets quickly? The chemicals in powder, on inhalation, can cause them lung infections and other respiratory problems.
4. Animals have a habit of cleaning themselves by licking. While self-grooming, they end up ingesting a lot of colors. It could be fatal for both your pet and for strays.

How you can spread awareness?
Make sure to keep your furry friend away from the colors. Try to put posters in your society or the locality to spread awareness. You can request people not to color them. Make the correct use of social media. You can use it to make people aware of the health issues that animals go through if we color them.
What all can be done if the damage is done?
If the damage is done, the first you need to do is take them to the nearest Vet. Apart from it, you can also apply coconut oil on their body so that the colors can be rinsed off.
