Human Rights Day-10th December

 

Every year 10th December is celebrated as Human Rights Day around the globe.

 

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of UN said, “As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, let us intensify our efforts to fulfill our collective responsibility to promote and protect the rights and dignity of all people everywhere.”

 

In 1950 the United Nations General Assembly declared 10th December as World Human Rights Day. The aim behind observing the day was to draw attention towards safeguarding the human rights of all the people of all nations.

 

In the year 2013, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights celebrates 20 years since its foundation.

 

In December 1993, the UN General Assembly formed a mandate of High Commissioner for the protection and promotion of human rights of all people.

‘The General Assembly was acting on a recommendation from delegates to the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna earlier the same year.’

 

On this day cultural events, exhibitions and political conferences are organized depicting human rights issues. It is been a tradition to award the prestigious Nobel Prize in the field of Human Rights every year on 10th December.

 

The theme for the year 2013 is ‘20 Years Working for Your Rights’.
